C’est donc avec un plaisir anticipé que j’ai abordé cette lecture, d’autant que toutes les critiques sont très élogieuses.

Le héros, Tony, un homme de 65 ans, arrivé à la retraite se souvient de sa jeunesse, il retourne sur les pas de ses amitiés adolescentes et sur ses premières amours compliquées. Il finira par enquêter sur son premier grand amour qui s’est mal terminé à l’aune de nouveaux éléments lui parvenant à la maturité.

Je ne vous cache pas que j’ai été déçue. C’est bien écrit et certains passages sur la mémoire sont très intéressants, en particulier les réflexions philosophiques sur la mémoire historique; mais le héros, Tony, m’a laissé de marbre.

J’ai trouvé qu’il passait son temps à s’apitoyer sur son sort et sur sa jeunesse. Qu’il cherchait constamment à se trouver des excuses dans ses errements.

Je n’ai pas eu d’empathie pour ces personnages. Le seul qui m’a paru intéressant est son ami intime Adrian !

Voici quelques extraits concernant sa réflexion philosophique sur la mémoire historique, thème qui est finalement le fil conducteur de tout le livre et de la vie de Tony :

 » A vrai dire, toute cette affaire d’attribuer une responsabilité n’est ce pas une sorte d’échappatoire ? Nous voulons incriminer un individu pour que tous les autres soient disculpés. Nous incriminons un processus historique de façon à disculper des individus.  »

 » La question de l’interprétation subjective contre une interprétation objective, le fait que nous ayons besoin de connaître l’histoire personnelle de l’historien pour comprendre la version qui nous est présentée.  »

 » L’Histoire est cette conviction issue du point où les imperfections de la mémoire croisent les insuffisances de la documentation. »

 » Je sais pour ma part qu’il y a un temps objectif, mais aussi un temps subjectif, le genre de temps qu’on porte sur la surface interne du poignet, là où bat le pouls. Et ce temps personnel, qui est le vrai temps, se mesure dans notre relation à la mémoire. »

Voilà pourquoi en fin de compte, rien que pour ces réflexions, je vous conseille la lecture de ce livre.
