Margayya, en tant qu’homme d’affaires redoutable, ne veut pas se contenter de ses petits bénéfices et après une altercation avec un responsable de la banque locale, décide de voir plus grand. Ayant bien pris soin de faire appel, dans les règles de la religion, à la déesse de la prospérité Lakshmi, il va investir ses dernières roupies et faire fortune dans l’édition d’un texte sulfureux sur les pratiques sexuelles .

Il va par la suite, avec l’argent gagné dans l’édition se lancer dans un système bancaire terriblement attractif pour la population. Son système d’enrichissement, qui fait penser à l’affaire Madoff le fraudeur américain, l’oblige à travailler toujours plus pour rester à flot…

L’ascension n’aura plus de limite pour cette homme qui considère la fortune comme un objectif de vie et dit que l’argent est fait pour être amassé et non pour être dépensé. L’argent lui donne la puissance et lui permet de tout contrôler et manipuler autour de lui mais son fils qui est un insolent fainéant, va le faire courir à sa perte. Ce fils, qui a été tellement gâté, veut toujours plus et ne sera jamais satisfait de ce qu’il reçoit de ce père. Il va l’amener au drame.

Ce texte magnifique à l’écriture poétique est quasiment une fable sur la société indienne avec ses traditions et ses ambitions parfois antagonistes.

L’humour et la dérision sont toujours sous jacents… les caractères et les situations sont souvent caricaturaux et excessifs comme semble être l’âme de ce continent.

Un vrai voyage dans le temps, dans l’espace et dans une culture très riche en contradictions .
