Ces romans dégagent à chaque fois une atmosphère particulière, les histoires sont racontées par petites touches comme un tableau impressionniste. La nature et la psychologie sont également toujours partie prenante des histoires. « Je refuse » est dans cette veine là ! de ces romans sensibles tout en finesse, où l’imaginaire décolle et se laisse porter par les personnages dont on s’imprègne petit à petit.

Ici il s’agit de Jim et Tommy, deux personnages qui se sont connus enfants, dont l’éducation, les valeurs familiales, les chances données par la vie sont opposées mais qui sont unis par une amitié sans faille pour affronter les difficulté de l’apprentissage de l’existence. Leurs destins vont finalement être à l’opposé de ce que leurs enfances respectives laissaient présager…

Ils se perdent de vue à l’adolescence et se retrouvent par hasard 30 ans après. Le choc de la réussite de l’un et de la médiocrité de l’autre provoque un besoin de retour en arrière sur leur vie, ce qui les a fait avancer ou au contraire ce qui les a entravé. C’est l’histoire d’une amitié décrite avec beaucoup de sensibilité.  Mais c’est aussi l’histoire d’une résilience de l’un et d’une descente aux enfers de l’autre.

Un livre que j’ai beaucoup aimé, dont l’histoire est tout en subtilité et en évocations…
