Un abondant pelage doux recouvre tout son corps et la fait ressembler à un petit lionceau. Sa mère étant morte à sa naissance, son père un modeste chef de gare d’une petite ville de province, doit faire face au regard des autres. Il maintient enfermé sa fille chez lui afin de la protéger de la curiosité malsaine. Eva va donc grandir dans un univers de solitude et de lecture où son intelligence et sa sensibilité vont faire exploser les murs de son isolement.

Sa maladie fascine le corps médical qui va s’arracher l’étude de son cas. Son histoire bascule lorsqu’arrive la confrontation inévitable avec le monde extérieur. La méchanceté et la dépravation vont forger le caractère de cette jeune fille très attachante qui va se rendre compte de son pouvoir fascinant et finir par devenir manipulatrice de son entourage.

L’auteur arrive a traiter d’un sujet très délicat sans tomber dans le voyeurisme, l’exploitation facile des personnes souvent perçues comme des monstres de la nature. Il y a beaucoup d’amour dans ce livre même si celui ci n’est jamais exposé.

Ce roman n’est pas facile à lire, l’auteur a une écriture exigeante de son histoire mais l’effort de lecture est récompensé par une histoire que l’on ne peut pas oublier avec des personnages extrêmement attachants.
